What is After Everest : an autobiography about?
"One morning in the spring of 1953 two men set foot on the highest point on Earth for the first time in history. One was a New Zealander, Edmund Hillary, the other was a Sherpa, born almost in the shadow of the mountain, a man without formal education but with a great natural gift for climbing and, above all, a life-long ambition to conquer Everest. This was Tenzing, who returned from the summit a hero to millions of people, throughout the East especially, but also throughout the world, which quickly came to recognise the man from the Himalaya with his captivating smile, shy manner and deep intelligence. He came to London and was received by the Queen and awarded the George Medal for his achievement. In the years that followed medals were showered upon him by heads of state, learned societies and sports organisations of many lands, including European nations, the USA and the Soviet Union. Encouraged by Pandit Nehru, who became his friend and confidant, he was appointed Director of Field Training at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling founded in 1954. In the ensuing twenty-two years he has trained many hundreds of Indian climbers in the mountains close to Kangchenju
