This thesis investigates the new nonlinear solution method called Extended Nonlinear Programming (XNLP) available in the refinery planning software PIMS. PIMS has traditionally used a method called Distributive Recursion (DR) that approximates nonlinear programs as linear programs. XNLP uses a nonlinear solver to directly solve the nonlinear programs.
