This study examined the oogenesis and development of eggs (oocytes) in the cardinal tetra fish Paracheirodon axelrodi through histological and histochemical analysis. Four stages of oocyte development were identified based on morphological changes to the nucleus, cytoplasm and coats. Vitellogenic oocytes contained spherical yolk globules but did not undergo ovulation.
