Intestinal capillariasis is caused by the nematode Capillaria philippinensis. It causes chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and edema due to destruction of intestinal cells and dysfunction of nutrient absorption. Diagnosis is based on detecting C. philippinensis eggs, larvae, or adult worms in stool samples, though biopsy may be needed. Albendazole is the treatment of choice and aims to eliminate eggs, larvae, and adult worms, though relapse can occur if treatment is less than 10 days. Prevention
