This fMRI study examined the neural correlates of positive and negative verbal jokes. Twenty-three participants listened to 48 stories that were either regular jokes, regular sentences, horror jokes, or horror sentences while undergoing fMRI scanning. The results showed greater activation in left superior temporal gyrus for regular joke + horror sentence stories compared to regular sentence + horror joke stories.
