The WHO South-East Asia Region accounts for around 39.5% of global TB morbidity and 48% of mortality, with India alone accounting for 26% of incident cases. Males are disproportionately affected, with a male to female ratio of 2.0 among new smear-positive cases. An estimated 450,000 people die from TB each year in the region, though death rates have declined with the introduction of DOTS.
