Jean Piaget was a Swiss psychologist who studied cognitive development in children. He proposed that children progress through 4 stages of cognitive development: sensorimotor (birth to age 2), preoperational (ages 2 to 7), concrete operational (ages 7 to 11), and formal operational (ages 12 and up). In each stage, children develop more advanced cognitive abilities as they learn to assimilate new experiences into existing cognitive structures and accommodate their structures based on new information through
