This document describes an experiment using thin layer chromatography (TLC) to identify sugars in fruit juices. Standard sugars including lactose, xylose, fructose, glucose, galactose, and sucrose were run on a TLC plate along with fruit juice samples and unknown sugar mixtures. After developing the plate, the sugars were visualized with aniline-diphenylamine spray. By comparing the retention factors (Rf values) and colors of unknown spots to the standards, the experimenters were able to identify the sugars
