Joule heating, also known as resistive heating, occurs when an electric current passes through a conductor, causing the internal energy of the conductor to increase and converting electrical work into heat. James Prescott Joule first studied this phenomenon in 1841 by measuring the temperature rise of a wire immersed in water from a known current over time. He deduced that the heat produced is proportional to the square of the current multiplied by the electrical resistance of the wire, known as Joule
