This document presents a new water budget and accounting of water usage along the Colorado River from 2000-2019. It finds that irrigated agriculture accounts for 74% of direct human water usage and 52% of total water consumption. Much of the water is used to grow alfalfa and other hay crops. Very little water from the Colorado River now reaches the sea due to overuse.
