What is The effects of galantamine treatment on caregiver time in Alzheimer's disease about?
## Abstract ## Aim The aim of the study was to determine whether the clinical benefits of galantamine for patients with Alzheimer's disease lead to benefits for caregivers. ## Methods Data were pooled from two concurrent, multi‐centre, randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, 6‐month trials. Time caregivers spent assisting with activities of daily living (ADL) and time patients could be left unsupervised each day were assessed using the Allocation of Caregiver Time Survey. In total, 825 patients with mild‐to‐moderate Alzheimer's disease were included. ## Results At endpoint, caregivers of galantamine‐treated patients were more likely to report reductions (41% __vs__ 37%), maintenance (19% __vs__ 14%) or smaller increases (26% __vs__ 34% reporting an increase >30 minutes) in time assisting with ADL compared with the placebo group (__p__ = 0.026; Wilcoxon rank‐sum test). The mean daily time difference was 32 minutes (__p__ = 0.011). Among patients with moderate Alzheimer's disease, caregivers of galantamine‐treated patients were even more likely to report reductions (46% __vs__ 37%), maintenance (15% __vs__ 6%) or smaller increases (25% __vs__ 42% for increases >30 min) __vs__ p
