This document summarizes a study on the effect of vertical and horizontal zinc interlayer on friction stir welding (FSW) of dissimilar aluminum 7075 and magnesium AZ31 alloys. The horizontal orientation of the zinc interlayer improved tensile strength to 126 MPa compared to 85 MPa for the vertical interlayer, due to better material mixing and formation of new phases instead of brittle intermetallic compounds.
