About this document

Kingston: Capital of Jamaica by Kristine Mendoza is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Jamaica was originally inhabited by Arawak Indians and came under Spanish rule in 1494 until it became a British possession in 1655. During the 17th and 18th centuries, buccaneers operated out of Port Royal and freed slaves formed armed bands called Maroons that harassed the British. Abolition of the slave trade in 1807 and emancipation of slaves in 1833 led to an economic depression and a slave uprising in 1865. Jamaica became a Crown colony in 1866 and gained independence from the United Kingdom on August
