Benedict Anderson analyzed the concept of nationalism in his influential book Imagined Communities. He argues that nations are imagined political communities because it is impossible for all members to know each other. Nationalism arose in the late 18th century as divine monarchy declined and new forms of communication like newspapers helped spread ideas of shared nationhood.
