## Galenic medicine Claudius Galen (ad 129-200), the prominent physician of the Roman Empire had more influence in medicine than any other individual until the Renaissance. 14 He demonstrated that the heart is made up of muscle and described the presence and movement of blood in the arteries. 14 Galen believed that veins contain blood, that the heart was more than a "circulation junction", and that blood flows throughout the body. He believed that blood ebbs and flows with the heartbeat. 15 Galen's ideas shaped medical teachings for centuries afterwards. Erasistratus (304 -250 bc) described intermittent claudication, showing that peripheral artery disease was present in the antiquity. 16 He believed that arteries contained a substance called "pneuma" which is replaced each time a person breathes. Pneuma was believed to be identical with air spirit, or soul. He believed that veins carried blood to nourish the tissues and that arteries contained pneuma only during life. When the artery was cut, blood rushed in as the pneuma escaped. 17 ## Medicine in the Renaissance It was not until the Renaissance that Galen's teachings came under scrutiny.
