Coworking began in 1995 with the creation of hackerspaces where computer engineers could collaborate. The term "coworking" was coined in 1999 but referred to collaboration, not physical spaces. The first official coworking space opened in 2005 in San Francisco. It provided independent workers a community environment to work.
