Anton Chekhov was a Russian playwright known for his psychologically realistic plays that commented on social conditions of the time. His emphasis on character over plot and avoidance of didacticism set new standards for the stage and influenced a new style of acting developed by Stanislavski at the Moscow Art Theatre, now known as Method Acting. Some of his classic plays include The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, and The Cherry Orchard.
