What is Ancient China about?
1. Ancient Chinese society was stratified into four main social classes from highest to lowest: shi or gentry scholars, nong or peasant farmers, gong or artisans and craftsmen, and shang or merchants and traders. 2. The shi were originally from the warrior caste but evolved to be mostly aristocratic scholars and bureaucrats who studied classical texts. 3. Nong or peasant farmers, who produced food, were the second most important class and paid land taxes to support the ruling dynasties.
