Skin is the outermost layer of the body, having a protective function, and is also the largest organ of the human body. It has various layers and sublayers, major ones being the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous (also called hypodermis) with varying thicknesses (Marieb & Hoehn, 2007). Any breach in its structure, integrity, and/or protective function along with probable damage to the underlying tissues, which usually consist of muscles, bone, and nerves, is defined as a wound (Thomas & Leigh, 1998). A wound can be a consequence of a cut, surgery, friction or shear force, burn, compression, chemicals, and diseases such as diabetic ulcers, leg ulcers, or carcinomas Hutchinson (1992). Data published by the World Health Organization show that 5.8 million people around the globe die each year as a result of injury, which is 10% of total deaths in the world. It is 32% more than the number of deaths due to malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined. Moreover, in the age group of 5À44 years, injuries are among the top three causes of death (WHO, 2004). Wound-dressing techniques and wound care products have a huge global market that is, expected to reach over USD 42,069 million by 2024
