The growth of P/ch/a pastods in a mixture of either glycerol or glucose and methanol follows a diauxic growth, with C t utilizing enzymes being repressed. Therefore, these carbon murees can not be used as a milture with methanol to simnltaneee~ly grew P. pastods and induce Ct utilizing enzymes, espeeially in a shake flask cultures of AOX-deflcient P. pastods. Among the alternative carbon sources tested, alanine, sorbitol, mannttoi and treludese, did not repress I$-gal production when methanol was used as an inducer in mut" strain of P.. pastoris. Our results show that either one of alanine, sorbitol, mmmitol or trehalose can be used as a sole carbon and energy source for P. pastor/s, although the doubling time on trehalese was very long. Mut-strains grewing in media containing trehalme, alanine, sorbitol and mennitol with methanol (0.5%) as an inducing agent expressed as much or higher amount of 13-gal as compared to the rout ÷ growing in methanol containing media.
