What is Encyclopedia of World Trade: From Ancient Times to the Present : From Ancient Times to the Present about?

Written for high school or beginning undergraduate students, this four-volume reference valiantly attempts to provide a historical framework for the perhaps overly broad concept of world trade. Entry topics were selected on trade organizations, influential people, commodities, events that affected trade, trade routes, navigation, religion, communications, transportation, and other areas. Each entry is cross-referenced and includes a short list of websites, books, or articles. Each volume includes a general, biographical, and geographical index; v.4 also contains a selection of primary documents, glossary and bibliography. Among the primary documents included are Pope Urban II's call for crusade in 1095, excerpts from Christopher Columbus's journal, the charter of the Dutch East India Company, and an excerpt from Adam Smith's The wealth of Nations. Northrup teaches history at the U. of Texas, Arlington; the contributors are academics and independent scholars, mainly in the US. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
