ince 1950 significant advances have been made in the pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia, affec tive illness, anxiety disorders, and sleep disturb ances. As a result of past and ongoing psychopharma cology research, people with one of the major psychiatric illnesses can expect to lead a life less dis rupted by their illness. As basic research continues into the causes of psychiatric illness, it is hoped that even more satisfactory pharmacologic answers will be found. This article focuses briefly on the major psychiatric dis eases and their symptoms and reviews the main psycho tropic drug classes, their indications in psychiatry, dosages, and common adverse effects.
