About this document

Vanillin Synthesis from 4-Hydroxybenzaldehyde by Reksy Wibowo is a document available to read on EtoBox.

This document describes a two-step synthesis of the aromatic compound vanillin from 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. In the first step, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde is brominated to form 3-bromo-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde. In the second step, copper-mediated coupling of the brominated compound with methoxide yields vanillin. The synthesis proceeds safely and efficiently in undergraduate organic chemistry laboratories. Students are able to purify and crystallize the final vanillin product, which has a distinctive sweet fragrance.
