What is Tom Jones II about?

This chapter argues that Henry Fielding uses the language of classical scholarship (and speci cally language associated with the Cambridge classicist Richard Bentley) in order to describe his own relationship with the reader of Tom Jones. Bentley's approach to literature--and especially his habit of o ering conjectures on classical texts--had made him the object of angry satires by Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope. By stressing the appetitive or sensuous nature of such critical vocabulary, Fielding casts his readers both as scholars of epic poetry and as consumers-and indicates the crucial role they play in determining the meaning of his text. I One of the respects in which Fielding most clearly follows the Scriblerians is in his interest in textual commentary. This was an issue which had dominated the culture wars of the early eighteenth century-as Swift, Pope, and others battled against a mode of reading which seemed to miss the point.
