What is The Differentiation of Transplanted Mammalian Gonad Primordia about?
The phenomenon of sex reversal in mammals is best illustrated by the classical case of the free-martin, finally given an acceptable interpretation by Lillie ('16 and '17) and ICeller and Tandler ( '16). A free-martin arises when the gonads and accessories of a zygotic female are modified by the action of a hormone elaborated by a male twin and transferred to the female by an anastomosis of the chorionic blood vessels. The gonads and gonoducts of the female twin begin to differentiate normally until modified in their development by the male sex hormone. When both members of calf twins are of the same sex a free-martin is never known to occur. So essential is the mingling of blood for the production of the free-martin condition that in twin pregnancies of oppositely sexed twins in which no vascular anastomoses occur, there is no alteration of the genital tract of the female. Because the sex-reversing effect is limited to the production of male characters in a zygotic female, it has been regarded as the specific action of a hormone elaborated by the male fetus. This naturally occurring phenomenon has not been duplicated experimentally in the mammals; in fact, no studies on \*For the p
