Melliss hunted lions and warthogs in Somaliland, East Africa. In his book he tells of a day long gone when gentlemen holding the King's commission could pit their rifles against lions in the most primitive of conditions. Somaliland, today the Somali Democratic Republic, was once a favorite hunting ground for British officers stationed there or in Aden. C. J. Melliss, of the 9th Bombay Infantry, was a pioneer of those professional soldiers on Indian duty who found new areas of sport in Somaliland. Ranging well inland, despite the threat of the Mahdi Islamic warriors, Melliss was able to hunt lions and 'pigstick' warthogs, recasting the Indian sports of tiger and boar hunting to an African caliber.
