What is The Giving Tree: A Tale of Selflessness about?

The story tells of a tree and a boy who grow together. As the boy grows, he asks the tree for things he needs for his life: first apples to sell, then branches to build a house, next a trunk to make a boat, and finally a place to rest when he gets old. Despite the tree giving everything it has to help the boy, he ends up alone like an old stump, though happy to be able to offer the boy a place to sit in the end.
