What is Waking Up on a Winter Night about?

The speaker awakens in the middle of the night during a winter storm. As they drift between sleeping and waking, they see images of a falcon carrying a branch of fire and letters appearing and disappearing on the window. The sounds of the wind and snow envelop the speaker, as does a feeling of emptiness and isolation. When fully awake, the speaker wonders if it is finally time to rise, but the dreamlike visions of the night linger, including memories of orchards buried under the snow.
