About this document

Understanding Categories in Philosophy by Nikolay Tarabanov is a document available to read on EtoBox.

This passage discusses philosophical reasoning around categorization and classification. It argues that conventionalism, or arbitrarily deciding distinctions, is an inadequate approach. While starting with lists is necessary, the distinctions must be justified by showing how categories are determined differently. Simply declaring distinctions does not advance inquiry. We are responsible for justifying our categorizations and cannot escape this duty through arbitrary decisions alone.
