The Mauryan Empire was founded in 322 BCE by Chandragupta Maurya and reached its peak under Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. At its height, the Empire stretched from modern Iran to Burma and the entire Indian subcontinent except the southern tip. Chandragupta expanded the Empire through alliances, diplomacy, and war. His son Bindusara ruled next before Ashoka inherited a large but bellicose kingdom. After a bloody war to conquer Kalinga, Ashoka promoted non-violence, Buddhism, and harmony within his realm.
