Brown algae such as Laminaria have a complex alternation of generations with both haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte stages. The large sporophyte generation is differentiated into a root-like holdfast, a stalk-like stipe, and flat blade-like structures. It reproduces asexually through the production of zoospores in sporangia and sexually through the fusion of eggs and sperm produced by separate male and female gametophytes.
