In recent years, Stuart White has offered an important interpretation of the exploitation objection, earlier formulated, among others, by Jon Elster and Gijs Van Donselaar. This objection refers to the accusation that an unconditional redistributive policy, such as universal basic income (UBI), is normatively undesirable because it would allow some citizens to enter into parasitical and exploitative relationships with their fellow citizens. As in his previous work, White raises doubts about the supposed virtues of unconditionality on the grounds that it allows violations of the principle of reciprocity. Under an unconditional redistributive scheme, White argues, some citizens are allowed to free ride on the work and efforts of their fellows. The central idea of this book is the notion of justice as fair reciprocity.
