What is Molecular Mechanisms of Cellular Senescence about?

## What is cellular senescence and why it is important? Cellular senescence is characterized by a stable cell cycle arrest accompanied by a hypersecretory phenotype, macromolecular damage, altered metabolism, and structural changes [1]. The senescence response is traditionally considered a tumor suppressor mechanism as it limits the proliferation of unwanted and/or damaged cells [2]. In the last two decades, numerous studies demonstrated the importance of cellular senescence in many aspects of tissue physiology and pathology, emphasizing that a key determinant for the beneficial versus detrimental functions of senescent cells might be their temporal persistence in tissues (Fig. 1). Strikingly, cellular senescence seems to be an important driver of aging and many age-related pathologies [3]. How cellular senescence drives aging phenotypes is not completely elucidated, but it is thought to be the combination of cell autonomous and noncell autonomous mechanisms. Senescent stem and progenitor cells reduce the regenerative capacity of a tissue, while the secretion of a complex combination of factors, collectively known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), influences
