Due to flooding and power outages from Hurricane Sandy, wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations discharged untreated wastewater into New York City waterways including the Hudson River, East River, New York Harbor, Jamaica Bay and Kill Van Kull. The New York City Department of Health advises avoiding direct contact with these bodies of water for recreational activities until further notice.
