What is On Running and Jogging about?

Jackendoff (1983, 1991) distinguishes two components ofa word's meaning: conceptual structure, which captures the syntactically relevant aspects ofa \vord's meaning, and a SD model representation, which captures perceptual Information pertaining to the word's referent. Jackendoff illustrates on the example of the words run and jog. He Claims that the verbs share the same conceptual structure (hence the verbs are syntactically parallel); where the \vords differ is in the 3D model representations. A dose examination of the two verbs shows that the distinction cannot be maintained, On the contrary, an account of the syntactic behaviour of run and jog needs to appeal to encyclopedic knowledge that cannot be accommodated by the algebra of conceptual structure, nor is this knowledge exclusively perceptual in nature. This conclusion points to the need to re-evaluate the ontological Status ofthe conceptual primitives which are claimed to be the ingredients of conceptual structure.
