What is Tagalog about?

The adoption of Tagalog as the basis for a national language in the Philippines in 1937 was controversial. It was renamed several times, from Wikang Pambansâ in 1939 to Pilipino in 1959 to Filipino in 1987, in an attempt to move away from an ethnic label and develop a common national language. However, there remains little practical difference between Tagalog and Filipino, and the national language issue continues to be debated.
