Sanders' book, clearly intended for a popular audience, is a survey of Jewish emigration, largely from Eastern Europe to the United States, from the period of the pogroms in Russia in 1881-82 to the resettlement of displaced persons after World War II. It is divided into seventy-one short chapters, and is based on published materials in English, German and Yiddish, and on a few archival materials. Memoirs, reports, and the contemporary press are successfully mined to describe the immigrants' milieu. The writing style is vivid and entertaining. One strength of the book is the author's effort to provide a broader background and context for the phenomenon of Jewish flight and resettlement. Unfortunately, Sanders' over-reliance on a handful of English language surveys for background chapters produces occasional errors and oversimplifications when heapproaches the Eastern European setting. (To cite one example, the Russian Minister of Interior N. P. Ignatiev was not dismissed in 1882 because of his failure to prevent pogroms.)
