The Blood Groups (Ax A2 B 0, MNS and Rh) of the Ladakhis P. N. BHATTACHARJEE This report deals with the blood groups of the Ladakhis, inhabitants of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir State of India. This district is situated (34° 0 N and 77° 30' E) on the North Western border of India. This frontier region has an area of about 97,783 sq. km with a population of 88,651 individuals approximately according to the 1961 census (Mitra, 1964). The density of the population of this sparsely populated area is about two persons per sq. mile. The vil lages are located between 9,000 to 14,000 ft altitude from sea level. From time immemorial, Ladakh has been the nerve centre of trade between Northern India and Central Asia. From the rest of India, Leh was reached through Srinagar, the main city of the Kashmir valley. From Leh a trade route went to Central Asia through the Karakorum pass and another to Tibet along the upper course of the Indus. About the origin, the Ladakhis are 'made up of three races -the original Aryan Dards, the Mons from Kashmir and the Mongol stock from Tibet' (Gompartz, 1928).
