What is The Little Mermaid about?

The little mermaid hears the prince say he will marry the girl who saved him from drowning. Upset, she goes to the shore and finds her sisters with their hair cut off by a witch to help the mermaid. They give her a knife and say she must kill the prince before sunrise or die. As the sun rises, the mermaid sees the prince married to another. She considers killing him but cannot, and instead dissolves into sea foam, gaining an immortal soul by striving to do good like the daughters of the air.
