Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of independent India. He emerged as a central leader in the Indian independence movement under Mahatma Gandhi. As Prime Minister from 1947 until his death in 1964, Nehru established India as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic and oversaw its transition from a monarchy to a democracy. He took a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement and promoted India as a regional leader in South Asia. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first President of India.
