What is Dynamic Splitting of Connecting Rods about?

This patent application describes a method for separating a one-piece connecting rod into a cap portion and a rod portion. The method involves forming notches in the connecting rod bore to define a fracture plane parallel to the bore axis. One portion is clamped fixed while an oscillating load is applied perpendicularly to the other portion to develop fatigue cracks at the notches. The cracks are propagated through by the load until the connecting rod separates completely into the cap and rod.
