When pipe is pulled out of a hole too quickly, it can generate large negative pressures inside the hole called swab pressures. This can result in kicks if the swab pressure drops below the formation pressure. Conversely, running pipe in too fast generates large surge pressures which can fracture formations and cause lost circulation.
