Myostatin is a protein that normally inhibits muscle growth. It is found in skeletal muscles and limits their size. The MSTN gene provides instructions for making myostatin. If myostatin is absent or unable to bind to its receptor, muscles will grow rapidly and abnormally large. This occurs naturally in some cattle and dog breeds that lack myostatin. In humans, lack of myostatin causes a rare disease where muscles overgrow severely.
