This is unavoidably and unapologetically a festive and high-spirited book a celebration of the endless diversity and fascination of the past (even when mainly confined to the last two hundred years of British history), and of the insatiable curiosity which drives historians and biographers to want to know about it, to find out about it, to write about it, to tell us about it, and to make us think and argue about it. Inevitably, this means there is controversy and disagreement in plenty in these pages: writing history, and being reviewed by historians, are not now and have never been activities for the squeamish, the retiring, the faint-hearted or the thin-skinned. But there is also appreciation, admiration and applause in abundance, and not a little mirth and hilarity along the way. Those who prefer writing about the past to be dry-as-dust or damp-as-squib will not enjoy this book. It is about praising history and (with one or two necessary exceptions) praising historians, rather than burying it or burying them.
