What is Hume vs. Aquinas on Personal Identity about?

David Hume questioned the notion of a permanent self and argued that our concept of causality comes from habitual thinking rather than direct perception. He also took a skeptical position that human reason is inherently contradictory but we can still function through naturally-instilled beliefs. For Hume, objects are just collections of properties with no underlying substance, so a person is just a "bundle" of interconnected perceptions linked by constancy and coherence over time rather than a fixed self.
