1. Krakatoa, a volcanic island between Java and Sumatra, erupted violently in 1883. 2. The eruptions grew in intensity throughout May and June, with ash shooting kilometers high. 3. On August 27th, four enormous eruptions occurred, with ash shooting 80 kilometers high - the explosions could be heard over 3,000 kilometers away and caused tsunamis over 30 meters tall. 4. The eruptions destroyed villages and killed tens of thousands of people, with two-thirds of Krakatoa disappearing into the sea.
