What is The Slot Microphone, a New Microphone Excitation Concept about?
A new miniature microphone concept is proposed in which the sound wave enters a gap between the microphone membrane surface and a cover plate through a slot for excitation. An analytical description is given and the calculated frequency response as a function of the gap height is compared to experimental results. The performance of the microphone was found not to be influenced in the audible frequency range when the height of the gap was decreased even down to 100 mm. This new excitation concept will facilitate a drastic reduction in microphone area exposed to the incoming sound pressure.
