What is Phytoremediation of inorganic contaminants from the aquatic ecosystem using Eichhornia crassipes about?
Water pollution, a serious environmental concern, is caused by industrial and mining activities, pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture sector, waste discharged from the industries. These activities have resulted a high level of metal contamination and nonbiodegradable pollutants posing a serious threat to the environment. Heavy metal (HM) contamination such as arsenic (As), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), silver (Ag), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), cupper (Cu), cobalt (Co), zinc (Zn), barium (Ba) and molybdenum (Mo) along with some ionic contaminants (ICs) like nitrate (NO 3 2 ), phosphate (PO 4 ), chloride (Cl 2 ) poses a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems and their functions. Heavy metals (HMs) are difficult to remove from the contaminated ecosystem because they are non-degradable in naturecome in a variety of chemical forms and therefore, they can easily pass through several trophic (Gall et al., 2015;Zhu et al., 2016). The removal of HMs from the contaminated aquatic ecosystems has become an important concern. HMs can be removed using a variety of conventional techniques such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, adsorption, osmosis and solvent extraction (Al-Alawy and Sal
