Bronchopneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs caused most often by a descending infection of the bronchi from an acute bronchitis. Bacteria enter the lung tissue causing purulent inflammatory foci of various sizes. Bronchopneumonia can be primary from a viral infection like influenza or measles, or secondary from aspiration, obstruction, surgery or other illnesses.
