In 1846, Karl Mark had stated that “the class which is the ruling material force of society is at the same time its ruling intellectual force” . The idea of a cultural, even intellectual, dimension of power was already present in Marx’s words, but was inevitably unappreciated, because of the paradigmatic role played by the material substructure. Although Gramsci’s theory unsurprisingly recognised the centrality of the economic structure, it made a step forward.
